Event Description

Mindfuness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) was developed by Dr. Zindel Segal to integrate the best of evidence-based cognitive therapy and the principles of mindfulness from Jon Kabat Zinn’s mindfulness based stress reduction curriculum. Dr. Segal’s research has demonstrated MBCT to be as effective as medication in reducing relapse of depression, and brain scan studies of MBCT indicate that MBCT may reduce activity in the areas of the brain associated with self-referential stories for many individuals.

Mindfulness based cognitive therapy for reducing risk of relapse in depression is usually offered in a group format. Dr. Kimberly Sogge is pleased to offer two 8 week MBCT for Depression Relapse Prevention groups in Winter 2012 and Spring 2012. This groups are limited to 12 participants.

The MBCT groups will follow the exact curriculum developed by Dr. Segal’s clinical research team at CAMH. These groups are not intended to be a first treatment for depression, nor as treatment for someone in an active depressive episode. MBCT groups are recommended for individuals in remission from prior episodes of depression, and individuals currently in individual treatment who can benefit from additional support and strengthening of skills that will improve resilience to depression relapse.

For registration in Dr. Sogge’s Winter 2012 or Spring 2012 MBCT for Depression Relapse Prevention groups go to http://drsogge.com/services/mindfulness-based-cognitive-therapy/ or contact Dr. Sogge at 613-868-0544 to ask questions and arrange a pre-group interview.
