Event Description

"…if you have trauma in your history you woke up with the conscious or unconscious desire for what all trauma survivors want: safety and control." – Michele Rosenthal

This online course in trauma and addiction seeks, in a learning context, to understand the relationship between trauma and addictive behaviour. Individuals who have experienced a traumatic event may resort to substance abuse or addictive behaviors to help them cope with the psychological and physiological effects of trauma. This course will allow participants to familiarize themselves with, and explore integrative models of assessment and treatment, to help trauma survivors reach a positive and lasting change in their lives. Participants will explore creative interventions that will enhance their ability to address the complexity of their clients’ issues.

This course aims to:
•Increase knowledge among helping professionals about the links between trauma and addictive behaviors.
•Advance the knowledge and skills of participants from different professional backgrounds about practice with those experiencing addiction caused by trauma.
•Review trends in trauma and addiction research and knowledge development.
•Highlight the diversity of trauma and addiction experiences associated with various lifespan stages, different cultural perspectives, and specific life events.
•Introduce participants to a range of practice methods and approaches, trauma focused CBT and culturally-sensitive responses.
•Allow participants to share areas of interest about trauma and addiction that are of particular relevance to their practice or professional development.
