Event Description

May 26 open house to share information about personality disorder

It’s estimated that up to 5.9% of North America’s population suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD is a serious mental illness that impacts the way a person thinks and feels about themselves, leading to problems functioning in everyday life. It usually begins during adolescence or early adulthood.

While treatment options exist within Alberta’s public health system, those seeking treatment can sometimes run up against long wait times to get help.

Whether people take a public or private path to treating BPD, they will have many questions they need answered. These include: What exactly is BPD? How does it manifest itself? What treatment options are available? How long is a treatment course? What is the likelihood of a successful clinical outcome?

We have been offering comprehensive treatment options and education for individuals, groups and families for 16 years. We offer therapy solutions outside the public health system on a fee-for-service basis, and can offer clients immediate access to treatment.

On May 26, media, health professionals and the public are invited to attend an Open House all about BPD.

Donna Hughes, Executive and Clinical Director of Inner Solutions, explains that the event is scheduled to coincide with May’s Mental Health and BPD Awareness Month. “It’s important to educate the public about mental health issues generally, but we wanted to shine a spotlight on BPD because of its devastating ripple effect on families and friends of those with the disorder,” she says.

Hughes notes that BPD can be misdiagnosed or misunderstood because many people appear to be highly functional in some situations, while their private life is in turmoil. Additionally, mental health therapists may be aware of how to treat BPD, but are not expertly trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, which is considered a Best Practice treatment for BPD.

“BPD is a chronic condition, but it responds very well to treatment,” explains Hughes. “A person with BPD can live a good life, but will have to self-manage it. Our expertise is in establishing a multi-layered approach to treating BDP using Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. That’s what we’re good at, and that’s what we’re known for.”

At the Open House, the clinical director, associate director, clinical psychologists, a dietitian and a meditation facilitator will be in attendance to answer questions about BPD and other clinic services.

“Our hope is to spread the good news about BPD and how it can be treated,” Hughes says. “We recently spoke with a family who thought that going to the U.S. for treatment was the only option if they didn’t want to wait for help. We told them we can begin helping them now, right here in Calgary.”
